Wow, that hour and a half flew by- good. It means I wasn’t bogged down while watching this. The CGI, however, bad. For movies with barely any supporting characters, the story needs to be truly grounded, thoughtfully constructed, and well executed by the lead actor. Will Smith is a strong leading man and did a good job, but something about the situation didn’t feel believable and the story felt incomplete. I think the shoddy CGI pulled me out of the film and it’s world-building. Overall, this was a quiet, sober story, similar to the Book of Eli. While it isn’t exactly my taste, despite the fact that I LOVE sci-fi dystopia - I can appreciate it on its own merits. Alice Braga also did a great job, ugh- love her.

You are not alone.❞ ──────⊹⊱✫⊰⊹────── The first time I saw I Am Legend (which was way before I had Letterboxd), the streaming platform showed the theatrical ending, and after watching it I rated it 3.5/5. When I rewatched it today, the platform had the alternate ending, which boosted my views of the film considerably. After everything Robert witnessed, it was madness to end the film with the theatrical version by saying the Darkseekers were just senseless creatures attacking for food. Why would they create traps, have a clear hierarchy and exhibit emotions if they didn't have higher brain function? I'm so glad the alternate ending is the canonical one being used for the sequel. I loved the camerawork, like the expansive establishing shots showing you just how bad the apocalypse wrecked New York. The CGI could've been better, because the Darkseekers looked very unrendered, especially in comparison to Robert. The jumpscares weren't too effective, but I overlooked that because the storytelling was very good (justice for Sam 💔). Will Smith was excellent as Robert, and he did such a great job at portraying the loneliness and desperation one would feel in his situation. Alice Braga and Charlie Tahan weren't bad at all, but there wasn't much to really assess because they didn't have a lot of screen-time (plus points for the Shrek cameo though). I'm really excited for the sequel, especially since I just found out the Michael B. Jordan is starring in it too. In the meantime, I'm gonna check out the novel and compare the two.

honestly i don’t get the hype. barely anything happens and then suddenly there’s a climactic ending. also showing the audience mutants had feelings motivations and companionship then he just explodes them and is called a hero is so american lmao the alt ending sounded so much better.

La película tiene espacio para todo, comedia ligera, luego de un suspenso asfixiante y terriblemente preocupante, donde Will Smith brilla por cualquier versión que tengas de su talento como actor, sin duda es difícil juzgar a la cinta en su final cuando tiene dos rumbos claros, uno te hace decir “bien que interesante es la película” y el otro “es realmente mala”, aún así la aventura y distopia plasmada es bastante enriquecedora como para deshacer la película en las desiciones del estudio que la produjo.
