Carnival Night

I believeCarnival Nights marks the third film that I have seen that was produced under the USSR — much like the other two films I remember viewing it came as a pleasant surprise just how much I did end up enjoying this film. The big screen debut of director Eldar Ryazanov, Carnival Nightsfeels like a very progressive film, for the time that is. It follows a group of employees under the House of Culture preparing the annual New Year’s party, all while the director attempts to change all their plans last minute to reflect a cleaner or sanitized version of the party. Shenanigans ensues as they figure out a way to outsmart the director in order to deliver the New Year’s Eve party their way. The film feels like it is very much against the staunch defenders of dignity and decency, which I think effectively summarizes the USSR. Sure, I may be reading between the lines a bit too much, but I can’t deny the connection is obvious. Regardless, Carnival Nightsis a genuinely good film. A little sappy, sure, but it more than makes it up with some catchy musical sections and some great set designs. Good performances from most but a great performance from Russian comedian, Igor Ilyinsky— who I thought hammy enough for it to make the viewing experience worthwhile.
