Kinski is absolutely magnetic in this. Schrader does well with the material too, the closest to a true horror film he’s ever gotten. He seems less interested in fanciful stories now, but I would love to see him return to a supernatural/horror film soon. Schrader Ranked (https://boxd.it/n9PFU)

10 times better when it’s just the weird neon desert and Moroder’s score. unfortunately there’s about 110 minutes of other stuff including Malcolm McDowell playing what I can only assume is Paul Schrader’s horny incest obsessed self insert. From what I understand the incest brother is not in the original movie, zero total points for that one. The pool scene is a huge highlight but apparently that’s a straight up copy of the original scene? Didn’t have naked Annette O’Toole though… Unfortunately this just feels kind of trashy, a lurid softcore porno in a De Palma vein with zero of the substance that De Palma brings. Whenever John Bailey gets to play with colors and angles it feels like energy is about to spark, that we’re going to get a kick in the balls before the rollercoaster starts. Instead it just meanders along, concerned more with the sex itself than presenting any sort of semi-coherent ideas. I haven’t even seen Tourneur’s original and yet I’d recommend that before this.
