Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
"What I care about bad luck? You talking simple. I ain't had nothing but bad luck all my life. Couldn't get no worse. What the hell I care about some bad luck?" “I can smile and say Yes Sir to whoever I please. I got my time coming to me” “I ain't never been a fool the same way twice. That's the difference between us” “But you still a fool” Goodbye Chadwick Boseman. We'll never forget you🥺
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is filled to the brim is captivating performances and electricity between the cast that makes the film so captivating. Having only seen one adaptation of an August Wilson play, which was Fences, it’s very exciting to get to experience more of his work, even if it’s played out differently than intended. There’s some incredible writing here, and I can’t say that it is close to the source material, but I’d hope so, since Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is one of his more well-known plays. It’s sad to see Boseman, knowing that this is his final feature, but he gave one hell of a performance. Viola Davis is another standout, it seems that her and Wilson’s work go hand-in-hand, since this is the second film adaptation that she’s been in, and I know she’s played these roles live as well. These actors had great source material to draw from, so it’s not surprise that the performances are as strong as they are. I’d love to get the chance to experience this live, and I certainly will have to get my hands on a copy of the play, since I really was blown away. Having seen Giving Voice and seeing the impact that Wilson has had on not only the African American community, but the theatre community, I really do need to get into his work and experience it for myself.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Chadwick stole the show. RIP Chadwick, he gave the best in this film and I'm so sad to see we no longer have him in this world for his art.

❝They don't care nothin' about me. All they want is my voice. Well, I done learned that. And they gonna treat me the way I wanna be treated, no matter how much it hurt them.❞ ∘₊──── • ♧ • ✧ • ♧ • ────₊∘ Wow. Without a doubt, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom has Chadwick Boseman's best performance; absolutely brilliant, God rest his soul. And of course the queen Viola Davis killed it as the iconic, bi, 'Mother of the Blues' Ma Rainey. I'm always in awe of her talent, and she deserves an Oscar for a leading role immediately. I really liked the supporting cast too: Colman Domingo is quickly becoming one of my favourite actors, and I felt that his performance as Cutler brought the entire cast together, similar to how Cutler was central to the band. His banter with Toledo and Slow Drag was so natural and likeable, as was his palpable dislike for Levee. There was so much tension throughout the film undercut by moments of laughter or anger (mostly the latter), and it was accompanied by gorgeous music. Maybe I'm just biased; if there's blues, my mood instantly improves by fifty percent, but I genuinely really liked this film.
