- i still very much love this queer-focused and modern twist on mythology. - it helps remind me that we shouldn't always restrain ourselves, especially when it comes to our desires. - for matt, his sexuality is part of said desires, but this could apply to other parts of his life--that weren't addressed in the film--as we all restrain ourselves in different ways. - something that fascinated me, which we see in different depictions of gods in film, is how even though tu'er shen entices matt, he seems to want matt to let go of what weighs him down. at a moment, he seems to be a menacing presence before matt, but at once wants matt to become more aware of himself. i think chen as tu'er shen really executed that well. - i still really hope huang and crew expands on these modern interpretations of chinese mythology. this one was really neat.
