One Eight Seven

An incredibly stylish, but deeply flawed film. One Eight Sevenfollows the story of Trevor Garfield, a high school teacher, following an attack by one of his students that left him scarred — both mentally and physically. After 15 months, Trevor decides to return to teaching and refuses to be victim again. Knowing nothing about this film had me believe it was going to be something like Freedom Writers. I couldn’t have been more wrong. One Eight Sevenhas more in common with David Fincher’sSeventhan any classroom drama I have ever seen. While it may be a stylish film, it comes at the cost of the core narrative — barely holding it together. It feels so reactionary & manipulative in the way it attempts to feed the viewer this fear riddled mess that it makes it entertaining. This is what a feature length film of those “this is your brain on drugs”commercials would be like. And you know what? I kinda love that. Watched for the Collab (https://boxd.it/bciZ6)
