The Matrix

While I'm not 100% certain, I'm pretty sure that this was the first R rated movie that I ever saw. I remember watching it for the first time at my friend's house on VHS and just being in awe over it. That bug in the belly button and later extraction was horrifying to me at the time, and still one of the best sequences I've seen in a movie. Being 9 or 10 at the time, I don't think I truly understood all the themes the movie presents, but I still loved it. I watched it a few times subsequently, but being much older now, I feel like this was one of the first times I truly “got it.” Particularly, the line Morpheus says about mankind being dependent on AI as a true accomplishment to celebrate in the 21st century. I interpreted it as less about machines taking over the world and more about us as a species losing our originality. Which is crazy foresight for a late 90s film. Unlike Constantine, Keanu Reeves was born to play this role. Truly one of the best movies ever made.

The Matrix

The fact that this was made in 1999 and still feels more futuristic than most movies today? That’s not just filmmaking—it’s prophecy.

The Matrix

Life is the Matrix. What an amazing film, filled with fantastic music, acting and fight sequences. It’s truly a masterpiece and one of the most enjoyable films I’ve seen in a long time. It has a few issues, but nothing major and overall this all time great deserves every bit of praise it gets.

The Matrix
