The Grapes of Wrath

The Grapes of Wrath is easily a classic. I loved this movie. Granted, it wasn't as good as the book, but most movies aren't (except The Silence of the Lambs). I wished they had gone by the book, but most movies can't. It was longer than I anticipated, which was a good treat! It does accurately portray what life was like back then, which makes this movie so much better. The Grapes of Wrath was a great movie that people definitely need to see.

The Grapes of Wrath

Considered one of the essential "American" novels, the film adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath may not do the novel justice, but it still does a fantastic job at portraying the desperation that many Americans faced during the Great Depression. This is a very personal story for me, since my grandfather was one of the immigrants from Arkansas that went to California because of the Dust Bowl, so seeing a film like this really does give me a closer connection to my grandfather, despite our distance from each other. Despite the differences from the novel, the film adaptation is just as gripping and emotional. Instead of reading the novel this summer, which I have been doing every summer for the past few years, I decided to revisit the film and I am extremely glad that I did, since I wasn't the biggest fan of it on my initial viewing, just because it was right after finishing the novel and I noticed the differences between them. The Grapes of Wrath truly is one of the most American stories out there and is definitely essential American cinema.

The Grapes of Wrath

“We’ll go on forever Pa, because we’re the people.” From the moment I watched that final scene in The Fabelmans, I knew I wanted to work my way through John Ford’s filmography. So, where better to start than with the adaptation of a novel I barely read for my HS english class? THE GRAPES OF WRATHis an engrossing and honest look at how the vague, and distant wealthy upper class seek to take advantage of the working class’s desire to live honest and content lives. Fonda is great and Ford’s directing is formidable and deeply empathetic. It’s status as a classic is well earned. If only more people would internalize the ideas presented in the film…
