Midnight in Paris

Midnight in Paris

When starting off a new year, you always want to start off fresh. You want to start something new, something that defines what your year is going to be like. I always like to make a great first impression when it comes to the year with the films that I watch. Last year, I finally watched what is considered to be on the best films of the 21st century, Mulholland Drive. This year, I wanted to be different, though. Instead of watching a movie that is considered to be one of the greatest, I wanted to watch something that would be really personal for me. When looking at what defines me, a large aspect of my life is France. I have a very personal relationship with the French, after finding a love of the language after 2 years of courses in high school. I immediately fell in love with the country and had the amazing opportunity to visit Paris this summer to celebrate my high school graduation. When thinking of a film that really meant something to me, Midnight in Paris seemed like the right pick to start off 2017. Now, it's bizarre to start off the year with Woody Allen. After only seeing 2 of his films, I can see the charm in his films, but I really haven't seen what many people see in his films (then again, I have only seen Annie Hall and Cafe Society). His films do have charm and wit, but the two that I have seen felt really similar to each other. Then came Midnight in Paris. This film pretty much is the same film as the other films. It's witty, has a fantastic cast, and you can see how Allen put himself into the film. After finishing it, I thought "You know, that felt exactly like Cafe Society and really similar to Annie Hall". I then came to realize that it is just Allen's distinct style. His films have seemed to be very similar, and that's just how he wants his films to be. I'm actually really surprised at how much I enjoyed Owen Wilson in this. He's an actor that I've seen numerous times before, but only really enjoyed in Wes Anderson's films. I've seen him play the same role many times in various comedies, so it was nice to see something that is different than the typical characters that he plays. It's clear to see that his character is based around Allen himself, as it seems that a majority of his characters are. There were many times that I actually laughed because of Wilson, surprised at how good of an actor he was. It was really refreshing to see him in a role that is different, as well as a role that shows how he can be a decent actor, instead of one who is typecasted. When looking at the cast of the film, I was astonished at how many big celebrities are in it. It's always a treat to see an ensemble of several big actors, but he seems to be pulling in some amazing actors, very similarly to Wes Anderson. Kathy Bates, as usual, was a shining part of the film, being really enjoyable to watch. Rachel McAdams was a surprise as well, as I've seen her in so many different roles. She wasn't a highlight of the film, but she was a really nice addition to a great cast. But the real shining star was Marion Cotillard. I have only seen a few films with her starring in it, but I can say that she is one of my favorite actors. She seemed electric throughout the entire film, giving one powerful performance, especially in her final scenes. Her costume designs were stunning, as well as the other costumes and sets throughout the film. I was so excited to see so many big stars playing artists that I know and love, especially after seeing some of their artwork while in Paris. Midnight in Paris was a fabulous start to 2017. It certainly has the charm that other Allen films have, but it really is a personal film for me. My love for Paris is similar to Gil's love, just not in the sense that I want to live there in the 1920's. I've developed a relationship with the city and it's people, and Midnight in Paris really shows how beautiful and charming the city really is. And as a start to this year, I do want to watch more of Allen's filmography, especially his older works, since they are supposed to be much better than his modern works. 2017 has already started off promising, and I've started this year with an amazing film. I can't wait to see what else comes out of this year.

Midnight in Paris

Midnight in Paris

❝We all fear death and question our place in the universe. The artist's job is not to succumb to despair, but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existence.❞ • ───── ⋅☾✵☽⋅ ───── • Midnight in Paris is a lovely and comforting film. The beautiful shots in present-day Paris romanticise the city and along with the lively background score gave it a delightful atmosphere. I loved the contrast between the bustling party environment of the past at night with the calm of modern Paris during the day. Owen Wilson was great and I think he was perfect for the role of Gil. Marion Cotillard as Adriana was gorgeous and complimented Gil very well. In my opinion the entire cast was excellent and well-picked; there wasn't a bad performance at all. This film is magical and whimsical, and paints a charming portrait of the beauty of love and the written word; I would highly recommend it.
