The Tragedy of Macbeth

Having never read the book, or any Shakespeare plays apart from Romeo and Juliet to my memory, I didn’t really know what to expect going into this. The first thing that strikes is the visuals. This is shot beautiful in a monochrome colour with a 4:3 aspect ratio which works really well. The sets, characters and costumes are also visually pleasing. I enjoyed the story, but in all truth I found the old English very difficult to understand. I tried as hard as I could but it felt like watching a foreign film without subtitles. Apart from this it was a great film which definitely warrants a watch. Watched at Showroom as part of London Film Festive. This film is set to release on Christmas Day in the UK. Watched with my beautiful ❤️

The Tragedy of Macbeth

Rewatched Blood Simple last night to prep for his latest here today, and what a slick and shadow-clad continuity it all has. Gravity itself has the characters in its spell, or do they throw themselves to it? Scrumptious! both from 1984 and the fleeing edge of 2021. This really is how I want most of my Shakespeare served up, in some bloody pool that'll glisten in the spotlight of fevered expressionist stagecraft. There's lived in spaces, and then there's performed in spaces, with harsh angles sliding across inhabitants throats and marking doomed speeches even as they're uttered. Will this get me to read more of the plays? ...... nahhhhhh. But I'll take whatever high-contrast cinematics they want to chuck at my face.

The Tragedy of Macbeth

Shakespeare just how I like it - a bit on the surreal side, but still grounded in the original text. Coen’s vision for this version of Macbethsuits the story well, filming on soundstages that make the film feel small, yet very grounded and isolated. It’s a sharp film, cutting out bits to create a more condensed version of the story, without sacrificing details that are important to the story. It’s visually appealing, but the real appeal is the acting - Washington and McDormand are powerhouses. Kathryn Hunter is another standout, just as many others have stated as well. Macbethis my favorite Shakespeare play that I’ve read, so I’m always excited to see a new adaptation of it, and this one certainly is a memorable one. Having seen Polanski’s Macbethearlier this year already, I have a feeling I should check out other adaptations as well, and who knows, this might spur a dive into Shakespearean adaptations. If I do that, I know for certain that The Tragedy of Macbethwill be one that will stay with me throughout all of the adaptations I’ll see.

The Tragedy of Macbeth

❝Bear welcome in your eye, your hand, your tongue. Look like th’ innocent flower, but be the serpent under ’t.❞ ──────⊹⊱✫⊰⊹────── 'Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.' This was a perfect mix of theatre and film, contemporary architecture and interior design mixed with bygone fashion. The black-and-white grading reflects the themes of good versus evil, and loyalty battling guilt. Denzel and Frances both brought gravitas and elegance to their respective roles, and truly were perfect. Kathryn Hunter was how I imagine the Evil Queen from Snow White in her old, shriveled form; just like the crows they transform into, the three witches bring about life and death, wisdom and curses, and are as incorporeal as the mist that silently floats into view between scenes. It's a gripping and haunting rendition of the classic tale of the tragic hero unable to grapple with his hamartia and allow himself to become manipulated by forces both material and insubstantial. 'Stars hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires.'
