A History of Violence

First hour is great, top tier, but the last half hour really let this down for me. How in the world did he manage to kill them all? It was so silly and made the whole think feel goofy. Also, William Hurt didn’t fit the role of mob boss at all, he was so awkward and silly. Really took me out of the immersion. A shame because this had some absolutely fantastic moments and all the rest of the cast killed it.

A History of Violence

a 90 minute movie and felt like 20 minutes. Short length but has so much packed in. Viggo very sexy. It should have been included in the Top 100 best movies of the 21st century.

A History of Violence

I think it lost a bit of steam in the third act but I really like all of the characters and the fights are really well done, definitely will be getting the Criterion 4K.  Viggo Mortensen was awesome, reminded me of Woody Harrelson a bit.  7.5/10

A History of Violence

Haven’t watched this in probably 15 years or so. Found it to still be rather potent and affecting. Really appreciated Viggo’s performance more this time around. Really one of his best.

A History of Violence

Directors Suite: David Cronenberg (The Infectious and Seductive and Bleak) (https://boxd.it/12N5S) A distressing veil of buried violence dampening the floorboards of an ordinary small town family. A twisting tale of truth and identity as it clashes with bloodshed and burdens; the good and the bad revisiting one another. Monsters in the dark, exposed in sunlight as anyone but themselves. A chirpy town full of chirping folk and a nice town, no doubt. Transitioning from murder to simply cordial beings, a seeping passage to underground disorder. David Cronenberg's most forward and thought-provoking feature illustrates the rationalization towards violence and dispute, detailing an intimate endeavor into a seemingly normal husband and his family who're thrown into dramatic circumstances. A somewhat restrained Cronenberg directs with simple but remarkable flair. Compared to his out-there products, A History of Violence is very tame, yet, it hardly stunts the experience. In a matter of moments the film can go from a sunny day to a shit storm, each step powerfully moving. It hits the nail right on the head. 4.3/5

A History of Violence

Right there?? On the stairs??? I enjoy the collabs between Cronenberg and Viggo, but this was not it. Not sure what it was. The corny writing at times? The way the story reveals its shock too early in the film? The lackluster diminuendo after the shock? Something felt like it was missing. And maybe this is because films from 2005 were very much ones I could pass up on: 𝘚𝘬𝘺 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩, 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 & 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘴, 𝘞𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘴, 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘪𝘵𝘩, 𝘕𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘺 𝘔𝘤𝘗𝘩𝘦𝘦. 2005 was a very specific look, feel, and jejune mood, which makes sense given what happened in 2001. Nothing was overtly new or daring. America was still traumatized by the horrors of the real world. And maybe that's why this film feels so toned down. But then I think, America, a country so infatuated by violence, are we even shocked anymore? Do we wince at the sight of a gun? Why do we come to the sight of a gun for entertainment? Why do we do so when we have children dying in schools? For context, I'm currently living in Korea where there are incredibly strict gun laws. For the most part, people don't own guns but the police. Though Korean entertainment media does have a gun for show every few movies, it's nothing like the wild wild west. And so my thoughts settled. How trite, this film, what he was trying to achieve--through violence--with identity and the mystery that constantly surrounds it within our protagonist (or antagonist? anti-hero?) and the people around him.

A History of Violence

Con mucho que alardear Cronenberg puede decir que logró sacar lo mejor de su elenco en uno de sus mejores dramas, el tensionante Viggo mezclado con el violentado drama familiar es la mezcla contundente de un gran guion.
