The Phantom Carriage

Night 16 of 31 Nights of Halloween Highly atmospheric, with some stunning visual effects, The Phantom Carriage is a slow burn that creeps into your psyche, and leaves a lasting impression. I’m always stunned by the quality of films from the 20’s - they are so inventive with their editing, especially when knowing that the moving picture hadn’t been around for a considerable ampount of time. It may run a bit slow at times, but it picks itself right back up, and offers one of my favorite films so far from the 1920’s.

The Phantom Carriage

a christmas carol (2009) (https://boxd.it/1HKW) was heavily inspired by this film. finally a silent film where a man gets shamed and punished for being an abusive alcoholic. it's usually women who get slut shamed and hated by awful male characters in these films. really enjoyable film if you ignore the religious aspects of it.

The Phantom Carriage

- the visual effects are impressive!! - Intriguing premise. Going in I expected it to be somewhat spooky & centered around the phantom carriage but it turned out to a be a great drama about an alcoholic, abusive man learning from his sins and trying to reform- basically, serving as a morality tale with a lesson on, among other things, being thoughtful, considerate and kind. - the score perfectly complements the film's gloomy and serious tone. - the characters are very well written. And the performances are amazing. Since there's no dialogue to at times hide behind in terms of expressing the character's state of mind, there's an added weight to every glance, facial expression and gesture, which really showed off victor's talent! - its available on youtube (https://youtu.be/oyF71x0sw4s) and worth a look.
