Jaws 2

While it may pale in comparison to the first film, Jaws 2 is still a fun summer shark feature that doesn’t take itself too seriously, letting you have fun while watching shark carnage. A great double feature at the drive in!

Jaws 2

Night 19 of 31 Nights of Halloween Finally, after all of this time, I finally have come back to revisit Jaws 2. It has been many years since I last watched this film, potentially bordering on 15 years since the last time I can actually say I watched it. It was due for a re-watching, and I am very glad that I did. Jaws 2 is anything but the original film. It takes a similar concept that the first film did, and camps it up. The effects become a little more cheesy, the characterization becomes a little goofier, the situations become a little more absurd, but it's definitely a film that is a good time.

Jaws 2

Well, as far as sequels go, Jaws 2 could have been a lot worse—not exactly the highest praise, but it’s honest. Jeannot Szwarc’s follow-up to Spielberg’s classic is, at best, serviceable—a film that hopes you’ve tempered your expectations but does just enough to keep you watching. From what I understand, the idea for Jaws 2 sprang up pretty much the moment the original’s massive success became apparent. The production, of course, was a mess (similar to the original). Various writers and directors were cycled through, many wanting to lean into the darker elements of Peter Benchley’s novel that Spielberg’s film had sidestepped. But, in true studio fashion, the heads decided audiences would want more of the same. “Well, they’re going to want to see Amity Island again, right?” I can imagine them saying, while counting their money and patting each other on the back for their staggering lack of imagination. That’s not to say Jaws 2 doesn’t at least try to deepen its protagonist, Martin Brody (Roy Scheider). It’s not entirely clear how much time is supposed to have passed since the events of the original, but Martin is clearly still haunted by his experience. When signs start to point toward another shark problem, he is quick to sound the alarm—and promptly ignored, for some inexplicable reason. The film also adds tension through Brody’s strained relationship with his two kids, who naturally want to spend their time out on the water with friends—an idea Brody is staunchly against after sensing danger in the water. Again, I’m just plain confused as to why anyone wouldn’t take him seriously. They live on a damn island where people were literally eaten by a shark just some years ago. None of these moments are ever really given the space they deserve. They’re there, sure, but never explored with any real depth. It’s all rather surface-level that mostly serves as padding between the shark attacks. It’s about what you’d expect from a film called Jaws 2. • Watched in 2025 — Ranked
