The eyes of the silent screen implore! Had put it on the list for the promise of 1920's ghoulies and ghastlies. Did not anticipate what is really a dark, humorous, earnest kind of ... docu-phantasmagoric(?) attack on the inquisition from "learned men" across the brutal expanse of so-called civilization. The horror of humanity's perpetual witchhunt is on full display, filled to brimming with memorable imagery and those eyes, always those eyes, in a quaint matter-of-factly presentation that belies its depth.

This was pretty interesting, but the only thing I could think of was that one scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail where they try to accuse a woman of being a witch; “if she weighs the same as a duck, she’s made of wood. And therefore? A witch!”

Night 17 of 31 Nights of Halloween Häxan presents itself as a documentary, which is a very interesting thing to see, as this clearly does show what the director belives to be true, rather than a comprehensive examination of the art of witchcraft. Nonetheless, this is a stunning film, offering some truly horrifying imagery, as well as an atmosphere that will put anyone in the mood on conjure some spirits.

a mix of surreal and spooky vignettes and commentary on how men in power treated, and still treated women, especially those who are mentally ill, poorly. ahead of its time in a lot of ways!

HORRORx52(026) (https://letterboxd.com/allbeef/list/horrorx52026/) #40 of 52 | Watch a documentary horror (https://letterboxd.com/films/popular/genre/documentary+horror/) film. While brilliantly crafted and undoubtedly ahead of its time, I wish they had focused more on the documentary aspect of witchcraft history.

It's wild to me that this is from 1922. Ahead of its devil-ass-kissing time, looking into the birth of witchcraft and the devil as this sloppy sultry nightcrawler with cartoon chesthairs and YASSSY press-ons, or basically, the origin story of HIM (his infernal majesty).
