Fat Girl

Film #7 of August 2017 Scavenger Hunt Task #10: Watch a film Berry Jenkins took from the Criterion Collection closet. Fat Girl is a marvelous film. I have been wanting to watch this film for a very long time, after finding it in my first year of French class at my high school. It took me ages to find, happily finding it in the Criterion Collection. A glimpse into teenage sexuality, Fat Girl can appeal to many viewers who feel similarly to the characters, making the film feel very personal to each individual. The ending is shocking and completely unexpected, completely turning the table on the way the film will end. It's certainly an ending that I will never forget.

Feels like a companion piece to Bruno Dumont’s TWENTYNINE PALMS. Both films well made, somewhat indulgent and meandering, both with shocking violence at their core. Neither film particularly works for me, though FAT GIRL is not as shapeless as TWENTYNINE PALMS, something which helps.

This movie is so uncomfortable to watch... The ending came out of nowhere. Love it.
