Alex Gibney directed what is to this day easily one of my favorite documentaries ever, let alone in modern times: Going Clear, a chilling look at Scientology. To be blunt: that was a masterpiece. This is not. Once you have that lofty expectation tossed out of the way, you should be able to appreciate this on its own terms Make no mistake, this is a very good documentary, and Gibney has already become one of my favs in the genre. I can't wait to see what he does next. I just hope it has some fat trimmed when he makes it. Maybe I'm biased because I went into this already knowing most of the story behind Theranos, and the fact that even from the start it looked like a lot of empty promises from someone who at best was in over her head, at worst was actively deceiving consumers, investors, and more in an effort to desperately make herself the healthcare version of her hero Steve Jobs. Not to mention the quick collapse of the empire she tried to build from it. But at the hour-twenty-minute mark I looked at the clock and realized this still had almost exactly forty more minutes to go, and my ass truly Gasped There are compelling descriptions and interesting stories here. There's a lot for someone unfamiliar with this saga to appreciate. But if you're heard or are familiar with even at least a significant portion of it (as I definitely was), you'll notice a lot of padding and stretching for time of minute details. A little unnecessary thing that kept a very good film from being a great one If you're a fan of HBO documentaries or even just have the service, I still can't recommend this enough. This is an interesting story, this has some stunning moments especially in the last half hour, and you might even be a bit more appreciative of Walgreens! If nothing else, make a double feature out of it and Going Clear. Again, if you're a fan of documentaries, Alex Gibney is a name you'll grow to remember, even if you don't already
