Starship Troopers
Starship Troopers
My friend got me to watch this, as he felt I would love it and find it topical to modern-day struggles. “Starship Troopers” has never been a title or film that necessarily garnered my attention, and unfortunately, upon viewing, I can see why. The political satire is incredibly surface level, and at no point does the movie really DO anything substantial with it. Members of this world’s military are subject to torture and infighting - then later humiliated, brutalized, and killed in often over-the-top ways. The film constantly shows that there is no reason to root for these guys and that we, the audience, should be smart enough to realize that our main characters (and the military they serve in) are the actual villains. That’s all well and good except the film tries so hard to have scenes of real passion and humanity behind the characters. It focuses so heavily on intense “holy shit” action that the political satire is often at odds with the tone of the film. And with how clearly satirical it all is supposed to be, it makes no fucking sense to me that this film chooses to play the ending as straight and celebratory as possible. I’m not a child; I don’t need to see the bad guys lose or get their comeuppance at the end of a movie. Hell, I understand that the movie is technically one big in-universe propaganda piece. However, I don’t have to like or respect the way the film handles it - which, in my opinion, is very poor. It doesn’t commit to the satirical tone in the end. On top of that, this film is just a slog to get through. The pacing feels slow, the set pieces are backed against dreary beige rocky mountains, and the performances don’t help much. I did enjoy the special effects - it’s in that “Phantom Menace” sweet spot of very noticeable CGI mixed with great practical effects. I don’t know how to explain it, but 90’s sci-fi just has a specific look and feel that I enjoy. Overall, I just can’t understand the love for this one. Most of the reviews I’ve seen on here reference the political themes, and it just feels so weak? I’m not one to base my enjoyment of a film on if I agree with its political message or not. It just feels like a case of people liking it for having the same political viewpoint as them.

I can still envision the TV spots for this that used Song 2 and made it seem like this was gonna be the coolest movie ever.
Starship Troopers
A somewhat satirical punch on war and propaganda, Starship Troopers is more the generic military action than it is a smart satire, laced with bland characters and less than intensifying shootouts. Bullets fly and the bugs stomp—an over-the-top smash of violence (particularly when it comes to deaths) is fun to watch in disgust at, despite its share of forced brutality. If anything, it explores the craziness and repetitive nature of war. The whole thing is gloriously stupid, and that's what makes it watchable—Paul Verhoeven directs his big budget sci-fi wonder with certain ridiculousness, and it mostly attains a slightly enjoyable watch. The film is long in length and big in action, but, it all feels too much like a video-game you're watching a friend play in the same room. 2.7/5
Starship Troopers
Netflix & Chill #9 STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997) dir. Paul Verhoeven Riding a fine line between unapologetically pulpy and real honest to god satire, Starship Troopersmanages is one of the best pieces of action-comedy filmmaking to grace the silver screen — mostly due to Paul Verhoeven’smastery in directing the actors through a pretty tough sell of an idea. The film plays out like a full on propaganda piece or some kind of recruitment video — the main characters look like the type of people you see on army posters, hot blooded Americans, and the sense of patriotism in the air is heavy. Not too disimular to his Robocop, Paul Verhoevenmakes sure the satirical edge never undermines the actual film. It’s a violent, subversive and timely critique at imperialism prevalent within American history and culture. It’s one of the best movies on Netflix right now that I recommend, a true cult classic. They actually sold kids toys of this film. KIDS TOYS!
