Flashdance

Believe it or not, I've never heard of "Flashdance" before. I knew of the classic scenes as pop culture references but besides that, I hadn't heard of this one until I saw an anniversary trailer for it before my "Evil Dead Rise" screening. Having watched it, I'm so very glad I did One of the film's strongest attributes is just how god damn fun it was! Every character gets a chance to shine and it makes for a very entertaining watch. Jennifer Beals' shines with a performance that is an undeniable highlight and an absolute delight. She's so optimistic and charming throughout that you can't help but root for her at every turn (even when her character can be a bit dramatic). Not to mention the soundtrack, including the iconic "Maniac," (which might be one of the greatest 80's songs ever?? It's up there for sure). For a movie as music heavy as this, they couldn't have picked a better tracklist This flick isn't without it's flaws though. While the film's pacing is generally well-balanced, there are instances where the runtime feels a bit constrained. At times, certain scenes appear to have been cut for time and on the other end of the spectrum, there are sequences that would have benefitted from further expansion. An additional 10 or 15 minutes could have helped this one! There's also a very long scene with flashing white strobe lights which killed my fucking eyes watching this in my dark room. Kinda glad I missed this in theaters as that scene would have probably killed me Despite any minor shortcomings in pacing and strobe lights, I really enjoyed this one. It left me buzzing so I'd highly recommend this one!
