Doctor Sleep
“sweetie im not the last. far from it. im just the prettiest” incredible performance from rebecca ferguson and kyleigh curran too and man i just really really love mike flanagan as a director. i really wished i enjoyed this more if only my wifi connection is cooperating with me, still love the film though. also did not realize this was a sequel (?) of the shining which i hadnt seen lmfao. i also didn’t realize that i watched the 3 hours cut.
Doctor Sleep
Rebecca Ferguson's entire show-stealing/star-making performance Flanagan expertly paying tribute to both King's original book and Kubrick's film that started it all in satisfying manners throughout (especially with every part of the final act), while maneuvering through the bad blood to find common ground in both their attempts at telling Danny's story (which gets an emotional end) Character-focused scenes - whether between Rebecca's cult and her, Danny and the new girl with the shining, or Danny and his own mind/recollections that he's desperately trying to suppress because he still can't cope with what happened in The Shining - that kept me captivated for a 2.5 hour long film, which...certainly ain't an easy task these days A horror film that's undoubtedly a great horror film, and a very unsettling one, despite being so long and mostly lacking blood and jumpscares? It's possible! Flanagan using the entire runtime to talk in some way about trauma: about how you can't find the answers at the bottom of a bottle, about how the aftermath of abuse can be just as fatal to bystanders, about how you can't truly escape your past without confronting it (even when that's the hardest thing in the world to do). And it wasn't always evident in only the hero's part of the story; sometimes the villain has her own passages and fears locked away deep and tight. Sometimes the worst you can do is lie to those beside you, saying things will be alright when you know that's questionable My gut tells me I'm being overly charitable to this with a 5/5 review. My heart tells me this is an extraordinary effort on so many levels that the few cons I can come up with are minuscule in comparison "Is this better than Stephen King's The Shining?" "Is this better than Stanley Kubrick's The Shining?" Both questions asked ad nauseam since production on this project began, let alone since release hype started with the first trailer. For my answer to both: I don't really know, and I don't really care. Because Doctor Sleep does a well enough job standing out and on its own two feet, walking the fine line between both I'm done doubting Mike Flanagan. One of the finer modern directors in the genre, I do know I'll be one of the first in a seat for whatever he makes next While we're at it, the next project Rebecca Ferguson has a role in will immediately have my attention. Oh, it's Dune? Fuck yeah
Doctor Sleep
the pacing was a bit off in the beginning but it got better as the movie progresses. i love the call back to the shining with the score and scenes. the run time was a bit too long imo, it would be better if it was 2 hours long. all the actors did an amazing job, especially rebecca!
Doctor Sleep

Doctor Sleep
This felt like a crossover between The Shining and The Haunting of Hill House, and I think that’s why I loved it so much. Is it a hot take to say I liked it better than Kubrik’s Shining? Probably, but I just love Mike Flanagan’s style so much, so naturally this was more my speed. Hopefully I can find the novel to read at some point, curious to see how it compares to this.
Doctor Sleep

Doctor Sleep

The hospice scene, Danny is so comforting
Doctor Sleep
Doctor Sleep was the inevitable sequel to Stephen King’s hit The Shining, following up on our beloved Danny Torrance, attempting to live life after the horrors at the Overlook hotel. Hearing that Mike Flanagan gave me hope for this film, as he really has been on a hot streak of good films recently, and Doctor Sleep certainly joins those other great films. Relying heavily on characterization and atmosphere, rather than jump scares, this film feels quite refreshing, especially with the rewritten ending, which King is notorious for bombing. McGregor does great, but the true star is Ferguson as Rose the Hat, who completely steals every scene that she’s in. She adds an energy to the film that charged every aspect of it. The Shining continues to be one of my favorite horror films of all time, but Doctor Sleep redeems the bad bits of the novel to create a fantastic sequel that I am eagerly anticipating to watch again. Flanagan really has figured out what works for him, which makes me even more excited to see what else he has in store for us.
