Diary entries forGrizzly Man
Grizzly Man
Grizzly Man is a beautiful documentary about a kind soul. Herzog certainly is working at his most humane here, and it shows, as every aspect of this film radiates with innocence and adoration. It’s a shame what happened to Treadwell, but he died being surrounded by what he loved and cherished, making his death even more emotional. Grizzly Man is a fantastic documentary, which makes me want to see what else Herzog has to offer.

Grizzly Man
“I see only the overwhelming indifference of nature.” A portrait of a deeply troubled man brought down by his unshaken hubris in a misguided, yet sympathetic attempt to live amongst wild bears to protect them — somehow. Director Werner Herzog (https://boxd.it/38FT) uses over 100 hours of footage taken by Timothy Treadwell in a breathtaking dissection of the man himself, crossing the boundary between observer and an active influencer much like Timothy crossed the line between man and nature. Werner Herzog delivers a film more akin to a conversation than anything else through his use of thought provoking commentary and his insistence in sharing his unique perspective on Treadwell and his beliefs. The footage itself is beautifully distressing as it not only managed to capture Treadwell’s love for what he did, but his deteriorating mind and spirit as well. Regardless of what your thoughts on the man may be, Timothy Treadwell was a human that was yearning for love and identity like so many others. In a way, Timothy is as free as he can be now and I guess I can take solace in that.
