The Devil All the Time

This movie’s got a lot going on; from the start, we’re hit with a bunch of complex characters. The vibe is super dark, with zero happy moments. Every character’s got their own issues that are all connected, which just adds to the story’s depth. Slow pace but the tension builds really well, The whole cast nailed it, and honestly, this might be Tom Holland’s best performance yet.

The Devil All the Time

A southern gothic that delves into the depths of darkness in humanity, The Devil All the Time boasts an impressive cast with material that can be quite difficult to digest, but ultimately leads to one of the year’s strongest narratives. I could list out the memorable performances in the film, but I’d end up listing a majority of the cast, since they all took the material and ran with it, creating well-rounded characters that feel hauntingly real. Director Antonio Campos chose to shoot this on film, rather than digital, which seems to be the norm for Netflix, which makes this film not only good to look at, but have a level of authenticity that make the sets and landscapes feel alive. As alive as the film may look, the subject matter is bleak, leaving no room for hope or inspiration, which can make it a difficult watch in the end. It’s certainly a slow-burn, letting itself settle in and let the stories naturally progress, even if it may make the film seem slow. I personally didn’t have a problem with the progression of the film, I can take a slow film, and this one surprisingly didn’t feel like 138 minutes. You can easily get lost in the film, especially with Holland and Pattinson’s performances, who really delve into their characters and put out some strong performances. The Devil All the Time certainly is a film that is not going to be an enjoyable watch for people, but is worth the time to watch, since it really is a strong film overall.

The Devil All the Time

The Devil All the Time

❝Years ago, Willard had fitted together a weathered cross above a fallen tree in a small clearing behind his house. He came every morning and evening to talk to God. It seemed to his son that his father fought the Devil all the time.❞ · · ───── ⊹⊱∆⊰⊹ ───── · · While I was expecting horror, The Devil All The Time certainly managed to keep me interested in what turned out to he a gothic Southern thriller. The three seemingly separate stories that make up the plot may seem mismatched, but by the end interconnect and tie up loose ends rather well. It was very intriguing to watch the cycle of trauma make its way down to the next generation, and the way people would try and use faith or power to justify their actions; in that sense, everyone had a darkness in them that made them devils. And despite the big emphasis on religion, I can safely say that God was absent in this film: though many characters tried seeking divine guidance, all they got in return was silence, or even worse, wildly distorted interpretations of what it means to have faith. This lack of moral compass leads many of the character's ways as the film progresses, guiding them towards more sin. The setting also helps to further some of the themes explored, because although Knockemstiff and Meade seem idyllic, there's so much despair and decay that tries its best to fester to the surface, much like the immorality lurking within their residents. I loved the cinematography and camerawork a lot; they made full use of the natural beauty of some of the filming locations while also showcasing the poverty and isolation the towns faced, so of course there was a lot of bleak colour grading to boot. The 2.39:1 aspect ratio allowed for some epically wide shots that helped emphasise the isolation of the towns and the individual characters, and also added an atmosphere of unease with all the empty background. It created contrast between those vast outdoor spaces and the claustrophobic feeling in the indoor spaces, especially inside the church and cars. I'm not sure which cameras were used, but alongside some additional editing they provided a slightly grainy look to certain certain parts of the film, like the beginning scenes with Willard, and it also supplemented the overall mood. The soundtrack was simultaneously tragic and rousing, and fit the film very well overall. To me, there were a few performances that really stood out; namingly, those of Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgård and Harry Melling. Each of them brought a different brutal quality to their respective characters, and they had such a strong screen presence. I'm not the biggest Tom Holland fan, but I do have to admit that he did a pretty great job as Arvin, as well as Sebastian Stan as Lee; I wish Mia Wasikowska got more screen-time though. I don't know how accurate this film is to its source material, but as it stands The Devil All The Time is delightfully dark and well-crafted.
