Alike it's ghost story, the film is genuinely chilling. The greenery is stunning; falling leaves and snow superimpose the remarkable mise en scene. It's beauty in so many words. Glowing like a star, the cinematography is without a doubt Empire of Passion’s greatest aspect. It compliments the generally enticing story. Playing at a nice pace, its tale is forgivenly drawn-out through the sensuality and the burdened wife and her lover. The excitement picks up towards a bleak but unforgettable finale, increasing the film's overall experience. Of course, the premise is of normality within the Japanese ghost stories of the 1950/60s, and yet it remains an instigator for some of the most compelling and genuine horrors in cinema. Empire of Passion sits there effectively.
