Independence Day: Resurgence
Independence Day: Resurgence
It seems like the only way Hollywood sees making a profit is to either reboot a film or create an unnecessary sequel. We've seen this summer after summer, with each blockbuster slowly becoming the same movie, with the same clichés and predictability. Just like any summer, 2016 wasn't the summer of new films. When I had heard that one of the summer films was going to be a sequel to Independence Day, a film I fondly remember watching as a child, I was actually really excited. With Emmerich back behind the camera, as well as many returning actors, I thought that this actually had potential. But as the release date drew closer, more and more reviews had come out, saying that it just wasn't good. I was hesitant to accept these, since I was really hoping that this would actually be a good movie. What could have been a fantastic sequel becomes your typical summer blockbuster. The first film, itself being one of the big summer films, was extremely well done. The effects were stunning, with some of the most iconic scenes in film history (and if you haven't already seen, the White House exploding is something that is always going to stick with me). But with Independence Day: Resurgence, all of that seems to go away. There weren't any scenes that stood out to me, with the only scene that I would remember being the anti-gravity scene in Singapore. The effects seemed to be extremely overdone, with practically every scene having something digitally done with it. Back when Independence Day was released, CGI wasn't something that was used frequently. But today, it seems like the summer blockbusters can't live without having some sort of CGI, which is usually over the top. The familiar faces were refreshing to see, but the people that come back weren't even that large of parts. When you're proposing a sequel to a film, with many cast members returning, you would think that they are central to the plot. While they were important to the plot, they weren't really necessary to be in the film. Goldblum, Fox, and Pullman were great to see again, but I don't think that their characters even needed to return. These characters were really the only thing that links this film to the first, other than the fact that the aliens are back. When it came to the actual plot of the film, I thought that there was going to be more. There was a ton of action, possibly being one of the most action packed films of the summer. But just because there's a lot of action doesn't justify the fact that the plot is pretty much the same as the original. They're bigger, they're badder, but there's really no difference in the plot. They come back, attack, the humans retaliate, people die, the aliens are defeated. It's a very cookie-cutter plot that's been used throughout many other films, making this film just your typical alien film now. After watching the previews for this, I thought that this was going to be different. It was going to go against what happened in the first film and actually make a name for itself by going against what usually happens in the genre. Oddly enough, the film ends in the same exact was as the predecessor. There were many scenes that seemed to be re-shoots of the first film, with the exact same thing happening. This didn't exactly feel like a sequel to the first film, but rather a re-imagining, using many scenes from the original. Summer is the time when some of the most anticipated films of the year are released. There are usually many films that I really do want to see, hoping that they will be actually decent. Independence Day: Resurgence had my hopes up, as it seemed that it was actually going to be a decent sequel, unlike many that are released today. Instead, what was released seems to be the exact same film as the original, just set in a different time and around different locations with new aliens. If a sequel really is successful, there should be things that relate to the original, but the film can still remain on it's own. Independence Day: Resurgence is it's predecessor, just with a modern twist. There's a reason that many summer blockbusters end up failing, and this is one reason to not go see them.

Mckenna Grace March (https://boxd.it/TdwWe) The Mckenna Grace filmography run continues. Despite me watching this because of her filmography this is probably her smallest role so far. I would've never watched this if it weren't for her though. This film took everything I liked from the original and downgraded it to oblivion. The story didn't feel anywhere close to as meaningful as the original. The plot with the queen I found interesting. But adding in a lot of random unexplained lore for an unlikely sequel was bad. Like this sets up a sequel but on its own it just feels random. The concept with the aliens I liked though. It was cool seeing a giant one. The last one had tons of characters scenes that made me care for each individual character. But I honestly couldn't really care at all for any of these. There is only like 3 returning characters and a bunch of random new ones. They also killed off some characters but the deaths felt meaningless. The only one I could say I semi liked was Dylan only because he's played by the actor of A-Train. The characters just felt soulless for the most part. They tried to just add so many new characters but I couldn't care for most of them. I did like a lot of the action scenes in this. I also liked how this leaned more into the science fiction side with moon bases etc. For most of this it felt very unfinished ngl. Like there is some weird cuts and edits throughout. I thought my vudu was tweaking but that's really how this is. Unlike the first this also didn't really feel like a "big event". The way the first worked was it built great tension and care for everything. But this didn't. The length to this doesn't help either it made me get so bored towards the end. Overall, the concepts were cool, new characters suck, no where near the importance of the original and a complete disappointment. It was not worth it lol. Edit: this was the 100th first time watch this year though so that's good. 🎉

Two stars for the surprise gay couple. Everything else…laughable, and that’s me being nice!
Independence Day: Resurgence
really impressively bad. i didn't even know they could make movies this boring
Independence Day: Resurgence
