22 July

22 July certainly is a gripping film, but what is the purpose of the film? Depicting the horrifying events on July 22nd, 2011 in Norway, 22 July examines the lives of the victims, as well as the perpetrator of the terrorist attacks. This film does fall into a very Americanized version of the events, which doesn't seem to serve the film well, since this is something that should be viewed within the views of the world, rather than what we experience here in the United States. It has some stellar performances, which make the film so gripping. But the film itself doesn't propose anything, it doesn't seem to have any purpose other than the show the events of that day, seeming to be more of a docu-drama, rather than a full film. The dramatized flashbacks felt more fitting for a documentary, rather than be featured in a film. A documentary might have been better fitting to tell this story, allowing interviews and actual footage of the case, rather than oddly dramatized accounts of the events. 22 July still is an entertaining film, as well as a harrowing one, that shows that anti-semitism and nationalism isn't just an American problem, but is a problem around the world.
