im honestly disappointed with this one. this lacks depth even though it may seem like they're saying a lot but it felt so empty. i feel like godard wasn't giving the passion he intended to do in this film but it felt half-made. my friend moon explained it better than me so here is their review: moon's review (https://letterboxd.com/adaydreaming/film/masculin-feminin/)

Um filme que fala sobre tantos assuntos ao mesmo tempo, de uma forma totalmente vanguardista. Porém, vejo como um dos principais temas a solidão juvenil e como jovens possuem essa tendência de ser perderem em suas próprias visões. No começo da vida, temos a mania de ter uma paixão avassaladora pelos nossos ideias, sobre o amor e sobre a vida. Nada é morno, é quente ou frio. Paul se mostra terrivelmente apaixonado e inconformado pela vida, de forma que age como um cego vez ou outra. Já Madeline é mais fria, não se mostra tão avassaladora. Num geral, é um ponto de vista inconformista sobre seus vários temas.

entirely too theoretical for me. i understand that’s godard’s modus operandi so maybe he’s the singular new wave director i can’t vibe with, but it truly just bored the shit out of me. i get the sense he was french tarantino. would give an extra star for it simply being such an incisive takedown of incel culture 60 years ahead of time if it wasn’t so damn boring.
