If Beale Street Could Talk

Barry Jenkins yet again has created an intimate portrait of life. With Moonlight, he was able to show growth, show how love transforms a person. With If Beale Street Could Talk, he takes a completely different route - allowing us to watch love flourish despite adversity. It's a film that is filled with love - unfiltered love that bleeds in ever scene. This is a subtle film, slowly creeping along as we watch Fonnie and Tish attempt to live their lives. It's a gorgeous film, both aesthetically and in a storytelling sense. Moonlight definitely made an impact on me, but I believe that this one moved me even more. It's a stunning love story, and one that deserved to be told. I didn't think that Jenkins could have topped what he did with Moonlight, but with If Beale Street Could Talk, he makes it all look too easy. He has proven he's a dynamic filmmaker, and one that demands attention. If Beale Street Could Talk is one of the best films of 2018, and it's a shame that I wasn't able to get it in last year, since it definitely would have taken one of the top spots. I am absolutely floored after finishing it, and will have nothing but praise for it.

If Beale Street Could Talk

Watching this on Valentine's day made me realized that love matters the most; love means sacrifice, love means affection, love means everything doesn't matter as long as you have each other to cling and trust. I fully realized i've never experienced it thus far however cinema is my own true love and love speaks through cinema

I'm just my mother's son. You know, sometimes that's all that makes the difference between us and them.

If Beale Street Could Talk

“Love has gotten you this far, don’t panic now. Trust it to get you the rest of the way.” Such an intimate, and impactful portrayal of black love. Not only in the screenplay, but in the way Barry so lovingly has his camera linger on the actors, allowing the audience to take in their expressions, the beauty of their skin. The character’s pain and struggles caused my heart to sink, while their joy, their joy filled me with such happiness that I cried. If Beale Street Could Talk is a wonder. A singular film that is, what I believe to be, the best film in Barry’s filmography.

If Beale Street Could Talk

Baldwin is someone who I've always looked up to as a writer, someone who captured the sixties through his jazz-style prose. This film does not do that. This film focuses on a novel that branched off from what we already know Baldwin to be, and focused on Baldwin's pure philosophy on life. Barry Jenkins masterfully adapts the monolithic novel to the big screen to accurately depict black love. The last time I ever saw such emotions radiate off a piece of work like this is anything Blood Orange has done with Black Swan. Black love investigates not only romantic love between our main characters, but the love that exists in the families of both characters, how their love attempts to coexist in a time full of hate. How it fails. How it keeps on. How beautiful black bodies try at loving each other, remembering the importance in this, to save themselves, to save each other in the face of racism.
