Django, Prepare a Coffin

Physical Media #3 DJANGO, PREPARE A COFFIN (1968) dir. Ferdinando Baldi Cathartic, violent, and exciting. These words accurately define Ferdinando Baldi’s Django, Prepare a Coffin. The titular hero Django, played excellently by Terrence Hill(who I think does a better job than Frank Nero, even though that may be blasphemous to some) finds himself in a story about revenge, injustice, and above all violence. It’s your by the numbers revenge spaghetti western, but the presentation is pretty great. The cinematography by Enzo Barboni (Massacre at Grand Canyon, The Ugly Ones) does a great job of capturing the feeling of a dirty western town overrun by crime while being paired with the fantastic score by Gianfranco Reverberi, whichtruly rounds out this lawless world Ferdinando has crafted. It’s not the best western I’ve seen, I think The Great Silenceis miles above it, but it’s definitely one of the better ones. If you’re a fan of well paced westerns with high octane violence, this could be for you. Viva Django!
