Wonder Woman 1984

Out of all the films in 2020 this was the one I was looking forward to the most. Sadly, it turned out to be the worst film this year. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. The first one was great, and I enjoyed almost everything about it. This felt lazy, rushed and most importantly silly. A child could have wrote this. The plot has so many plot holes it would take me hours to write about them all. The run time is ridiculous, so much of what happens doesn't need to. I'm all for a long film but not when its long for no reason whatsoever. Poor performances all round, Gadot and Pine were okay but not as good as in the original. The tropes in this are so overused as well, magical wish grant to get back a dead character, evil villain who goes crazy for power, honestly a five year old could’ve wrote this. Don't have a lot more to say as its such a stupid film, don't watch it, you'll waste your time.

Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984

“Greatness is not what you think” “This world is not yet ready for all that you'll do” ...hoo boy Okay so first thing's first: if you're going to see a new film this weekend, make it Soul. That's not up for discussion Now that we've got that out of the way, I want to say there have been Other films where I've basically had whiplash going from something I loved to something I hated so quick or frequently over the course of its runtime. But I think this is the first time it happened with something I was actually excited to see? The flight through the fireworks scene is up there for one of my fav scenes of the year in film. Just absolutely beautiful The 80s fashion tryout diss scene was a personal attack There were like a million instances of creepy men being rejected and I was here for all of it The Cheetah costume reveal scene made me pause, 1) to stop laughing and 2) to make sure my computer wasn't glitching and making it look worse than it actually did I loved the mall scene Why would you have a villain's revelation/turn-to-villainy moment be her kicking a would-be rapist's ass? The would-be rapist deserved his ass kicked! I enjoyed some Gadot/Pine scenes (even though I think he shouldn't have come back and even though I hated how overreliant on him they made her character in the second half, which felt pretty confusingly contradictory to her attitude in the first half before his return!) Why would you have Pedro Pascal play Trump? He was good at it admittedly, but. I've seen enough rich straight men talking shit on TV this year (and the prior 4 years, and the upcoming 4 years) without needing to also see it in a film to also close out the year That midcredits scene!!!!!! Where's my cute 80s soundtrack?! One Duran Duran song doesn't count I loved Wonder Woman. I was psyched from the end credits on for more of this character, and even for more of Gadot as her (despite her putting her foot in her mouth more and more as she's given promo appearances). I was stupidly excited for this sequel in particular from the instant the first neon promotional poster was displayed hyping this up. I expected this to be one of my fav films of the year, not just superhero-wise either, pre-plague. Hopefully the inevitable third entry doesn't feel this disappointing

Wonder Woman 1984

Well, I’m at a bit of a loss for words. Wonder Woman 1984. What an intriguing departure from the first film. My biggest qualm with this film is why it was even made. It doesn’t push Diana’s character in any meaningful direction, offering thinly written villains and a plot that is highly predictable, yet convoluted. It took an hour and a half for the film to really begin to establish the actual plot, leaving the last hour to cram as much action and plot development in as they could. And while I did enjoy Kristen Wiig’s character, her sub-plot involving potential assault didn’t sit right with me, especially when characters were being critical of her protecting herself. Wiig does bring a lot of charm to the character, but in the end, she fell victim to a lackluster screenplay that didn’t do anything with the character. I was hoping to enjoy this film, as I did enjoy most of the first film. It feels like this is just a filler film, that it was just needed to pass some time by before they release another big film for the series. At the end of the day, the events of this film don’t mean anything when it comes to the progression of the film series, and doesn’t push Diana’s character into new depths. I’d be fine if we got to see a new side to this character, like Marvel managed to do with Thor: Ragnarok, but unfortunately, nothing got done with this film. As hopeful as I am for the future of the DCEU, it’s films like this that leave me worried. I’ll continue to go on this journey with the DCEU, but I’m more and more hesitant with every release. I just wonder what this franchise would have looked like if Snyder was still in creative control, but I still have hope that there is redemption for these films.
