Eve's Bayou

memory is a selection of images. some elusive, others printed indelibly on the brain. each image is like a thread. each thread woven together to make a tapestry of intricate texture, and the tapestry tells a story, and the story is our past °˖𓍢ִ໋ 𖡼 ⊹ this is why we need more black female directors and writers!!!!!

Eve's Bayou

Really brilliantly done. Jurnee Smollet is legit great in this. Kasi Lemmons - underrated? Haunting and tragic.

Eve's Bayou

“Most people’s lives are a great disappointment to them. No one leaves this earth without feeling terrible pain. If there if there is no divine explanation at the end of it all—that’s sad.” EVE’S BAYOU is not at all what I was expecting. Days later and I am still trying to sift through my thoughts and find the rights words. A film about generational curses and trauma, yes. But watch I really latched onto was the solemnity of how our minds can trick us. How memory is not truth, just the story we tell to ourselves to have the world make sense. But that’s not to say our memory is wholly a lie either, nor our feelings. I related very much to Meagan Good’s character. Maybe how I remember my past isn’t correct, maybe I got the facts wrong or out of order. But what I felt, and the aftermath of those feelings, is not a lie. I appreciated the film for not going all in on either direction however, I must say that I still felt uncomfortable with how her character was treated at the end. Throughout the film it is clear that something external is fueling her decisions and her need to act out/act grown and the film never truly confronts that. No one does anything like she did without encouragement and belief that it’s OK. I’ll have to revisit this again. Another element I enjoyed was the African spirituality/magic that persisted through their family’s bondage and long after it. I felt for Mozelle. Was she cursed? Or was she blessed to experience all that love in one life? Is it better to have loved and lost that not at all? Compelling questions. Also, Lynn Whitfield has always been one of the most gorgeous actresses I’ve ever seen on screen and that remains true to this day. Ethereal.
