❝You've had it figured out all along, Muqtada. Never get out of the bed.❞ ─── ･ ｡ﾟ☆: *.☽ .* :☆ﾟ. ─── This was a huge disappointment. I like the book, and reread it before watching this film to compare the two, but I just became sad. The main issue I had was Craig. In the book, he's a very typical sounding fifteen year old who's journey is likeable, but in the film he's just an asshole with no social awareness. There's no in-depth backstory that explains why he acts like this, and he screws up nearly every situation he's in. There's also the problem of the story being diluted down into 'stressed boy makes out with girl and magically gets cured'. The book spends a lot of time building Craig's relationships with the people in Six North as well as friends and family, because they're a big part of his treatment, but the film turned all the patients into stereotypes of POC with superficial bonds with Craig; I actually almost lost my mind when his mother and sister commented on Jennifer/Charles and used that slur. That's another thing: his parents are so detached and uncaring, especially his dad. There was no character growth from anyone. I'd even be able to put aside a little animosity if the 'comedy' was good, but alas. It's a very typical John Green-esque piece of well-meaning fiction that falls severely flat on its face and has nothing to show for it. The only reason I'm giving it one star is for my queen Viola Davis.
