Slender Man
i needed to see if it was as bad as everyone said. it was. someone needs to take the horror elements from this film and put them in an actual good slender man film.

If this came out in 2012, it would have hit so hard
Slender Man
Horror is a genre that I hold near and dear to my heart. Growing up, horror was a genre that I wasn't allowed to watch, in fear that I was going to be scared. As a younger child, the idea of horror allured me. I kept finding myself gravitating toward the genre, whether it be through writing my own creepy tales to reading the Goosebumps series. To this day, horror is a genre that I still hold very close to me, since it's something that I didn't quite get growing up. Living in the digital age, it wasn't hard to not know about Slender Man. The popular Creepypasta was something that everyone seemed to be talking about, it literally was the name on everybody's lips. It was a concept that was interesting, but was something that I myself never delved into. Years after the fact, we get the documentary Beware the Slenderman, showing just how dangerous the internet can be with young, susceptible children. And here we are, a few years after an eye-opening documentary, we get the official horror film version of the internet's favorite folktale. It has been a very long time since I have been so torn about a film. Slender Man is in no means a terrible film, at least by a technical standpoint. But as a horror film that was meant to be enjoyed, it ended up being a dud. There was so much potential for this film, there were so many things that had been done right, so what exactly went wrong? As stated before, this film on a technical level is stunning. For me, the visuals are exactly what you'd want in a horror film. The palate of the film was stunning, with each scene seeming to have a lack of warmth, with a focus on blue tones. These scenes do work to build tension with scenes in the forest, but the entire film looks surprisingly beautiful with these tones. As for the tone of the film, that was another surprise. Throughout the film, you could sense the buildup, sense the amount of dread and fear that the characters were going through. While the pace of the film seems to be a big problem with many, the film actually flowed really well and was actually a decent length for the material. The score of the film also is worth noting, and while it is nothing spectacular and new within the genre (as the score of The Witch was something completely different than anything being released at the time, Slender Man stayed generic), the score still builds enough tension to keep the film going. As for the writing, there were times that you could tell that the writers were older than the audience, as well as written by men, the film's dialogue wasn't atrocious. So, on a little more of a technical level, this film succeeds. So, what went wrong then? This film's largest hinderance is it's rating. PG-13 films typically are made to appeal to a general audience. They're able to be watched by a majority of teens, as well as the parents, so there's more money coming in for the studio. Slender Man is a film that deserved to be rated R. If this film had a different rating, this film could have been amazing. With the impressive technical elements, there was only one thing holding this film back; the studio's fear of loss. This film was destined to be popular, since Slender Man himself is still in pop culture, so it was destined to be rated for nearly everyone. If this film were a little different, having less visual impact, as well as tone, then this rating would have been fine and would have been panned, just as it is not. But if the studio was willing to take a risk and make an experimental horror film that actually focuses on fear, then this film would have been nothing short of stunning. Unfortunately, studios aren't ready to take risks in horror films. Horror films tend to make a decent amount of money, enough to cover the cost of the film, so it's natural for studios to take risks. Sadly enough, Sony decided to play it safe here, with the film getting clipped down to an amount that can be consumed by the general audience. It's a shame that this film ended up being clipped, because there was so much potential, just not enough guts to put it out on the screen. Horror continues to be one of my favorite genres, and it hurts to see a film with so much potential like Slender Man get sacrificed to the PG-13 rating. While there have been many good PG-13 horror films, such as The Woman in Black, the rating here doesn't suit the type of film that they were trying to make. Slender Man isn't necessarily a terrible film, as it is a film with a lot of potential, but with Sony not willing to take risks, this film becomes a film with a generic plot and half-decent characters in an otherwise stunning film. I just hope to see the day where major studios are willing to let directors take risks and create truly horrifying films.

The lighting was terrible. I could barely see the screen. Also, so boring and not scary at all.
