Diary entries forThe Servant
The Servant
The Servant
“I don't give a tinker's gob what you think!” Deliciously delirious, The Servantexplores the classism within the film through sexual tension. Dirk Bogarde manages to deliver one of his best performances that I’ve seen from him, thus far. I don’t have much to say about this one besides the fact that Dirk was the standout. I felt it went a bit too long and I slowly lost interest in seeing the power dynamic between the two leads play out. I also found it a little confusing in the later half, even though I found that half the best.
The Servant
the second half was delicious, absolutely fascinating. and omg pta has definitely seen this film, it seems. love it! think my favorite type of stories are the ones that deal with power struggles -- exhilarating stuff.
The Servant
Incredible. Truly starting the year off strong. A perfect film with constantly good blocking that rears you in, slowly, anxiously, into the power imbalance between master and servant. And between both roles is the subtly of a deranged queer love that I wish was explored more. But at the heart of it, what is the mirror but a passageway into our deepest desires and sickest psyches? Beautiful shots, and AGAIN, blocking is incredible, and loved the way this looks in black and white. There's a scene in which they both play ball along the staircase, watching them entrapped in shadows and a dutch tilt and AGAIN blocking that speaks for the entirety of the film. A masterwork in framing a shot and creating quiet tension to add up to a fun, twisted end.
