Genuinely shocked at myself for watching this twice. My first time around, I focused on the film's long runtime and whined about it, but during my second go around, I actually enjoyed watching the movie. Knowing that I was going into a titan of a runtime, it allowed me to focus less on that and more on the acting and technical aspects of the film. The story is great and the cinematography is even better. Something else that I admired about the film is that the acting didn't feel overdone, which is usually a critique I have for silent films. Of course, I admired the tinted footage, but I also thought the camera movement and framing was always phenomenal. You can also tell just how passionate Abel Gance is during the duration of the film. However, this passion may be too much. Where Act I and II (or "The First Epoch") feel like genuine masterpieces, Act III takes a hard turn in the story and I almost completely disassociate from the film entirely. Thankfully, Act IV brings me back into the film, but Act III still poisons the film for me. Overall, this is an amazing movie, and I can't believe this monster of a film was even made. 8/10.

I am literally stunned by the first restored part of the "Grande version” (version “Apollo”) wanted by Gance. Absolute masterpiece.
