Murmur of the Heart

Freudian bildungsroman with WesAnderson enthusiasm that ends with one big BANG if you know what I mean 👀👀👀 A bit shocked to find that this was semi-autobiographical, and seeing that it took years in films to actually tackle his past says something about how personal this film is. How it fidgets, uncomfortably. It stretches and groans like puberty. In its latter moments, I was put into sleeper mode as I was unsure with what Malle was trying to achieve in fiction with his own history, but young Benoît is charming enough and Massari plays the perfect French mom in an adorable Italian-Italicized French that builds a lot of charm in the film. Boys are boys. Mean and dumb. But cuter when they like jazz. And deep down, they love their mothers. Like 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 love them 🤡
