Apostle

Night 17 of 31 Nights of Halloween Apostle is a film that I had tried to keep in the dark about. Only knowing that Gareth Evans directed it, I went into this film without seeing a trailer, without knowing any aspect of the plot, just so I could come in completely unbiased. Apostle is one of those rare, genre-bending films that leave you speechless. And, I still am speechless when thinking about this film. Evans creates a world filled with so much dread, terror, horror, and even bits of hope, all strung together with gore and beautiful imagery. Now that I've seen the film, I've been able to read some reviews, and I see that a lot of people do not like the first hour of the film, as it is a slow build up to the crazy second half. The first hour or so does move by slowly, but it creates the uneasy atmosphere that makes the film work so effectively. You open to beautiful imagery, and then slowly dip into a world of terror, the beauty seeming to be consumed by darker colors, darker characters, until we reach the climax of the film. Apostle is a truly unforgettable film, and is one that I foresee to gain a big cult following. It's not necessarily a pure horror film, but a hybrid of horror, thriller, and mystery, which normally wouldn't seem to work, but works wonders here.

Hooptober 12 (https://boxd.it/O4q2m) #21 of 33 • 1 of 3 cult or conspiracy (https://www.ranker.com/list/best-horror-movies-about-cults/ranker-film) films AND 2 of 9 different decades (https://letterboxd.com/films/genre/horror/by/release/size/small/) (2010s) So mysterious and moody. I was extremely surprised to see Gareth Evans’ name attached to this project, seeing as how I’ve only ever known him to direct awesome action flicks like theRaid (https://letterboxd.com/films/in/the-raid-collection/by/release-earliest/size/large/)duology. It now makes sense that he would craft such a twisted and stylized horror film given that he also directed my favorite segment fromV/H/S/2 (https://letterboxd.com/film/v-h-s-2/). The film itself is extremely engaging with its story and visuals that had me hooked until the very end. Evans’ style of shooting action is prevalent in a couple of scenes which is fun to see, and there are maybe 1 or 2 others that are up there as some of my all-time favorite moments in horror. The videography and cinematography are also a sight to behold. I was left hoping for some clearer answers to some of the more ambiguous and mysterious questions, but I was pleasantly content with the overall film and its effectiveness.

Apostle

The Year is 2018: Ranked and Reviewed (https://boxd.it/1OIs4) I had high hopes for Gareth Evans latest feature Apostle ever since seeing the trailer — what I saw looked brutal, bleak, and even scary. Unfortunately the result left me underwhelmed and almost frustrated, despite it being those three things. Over two hours and ten minutes, the film dishes out a lot of foreboding moments and upright evil — the latter mostly taking place in the second half — as it follows a man on an island inhabited by a religious cult as he seeks his missing sister. What hurts Apostle is its messy lead character, despite actor Dan Stevens terrific performance; he does what his written character provides, even if the man's story isn't enough to make him likable. Then there's the slow nature of the movie; a lot could have been cut, but then, its story would be all to very simple. The deaths are brutal and there are intense moments; one scene of underground spooks turned into the horror that I thought I was going to get, which gave me some hope. Sadly, no matter how many horrific images it threw at the screen, Apostle just didn't do it for me. 2.7/5

Apóstol es un film diferente violento y contundente,Que logra implementar momentos reales de tensión a medida que su trama se desenvuelve,Su metafórico final hace que la cinta pierda un poco de peso pero realmente es una experiencia interesante para una historia como esta.
