The Ballad of Narayama

Very heavy story punctuated by rural scenes and family life. A village operating on the far edge of subsistence, its inhabitants seemingly just one or two levels past the mountain animals copulating and devouring each other. Where the animals have instinct, the humans have centuries of tradition and the uneven will to see it through. I wonder if the edges are truly beginning to fray.
