The Wild Pear Tree
It's been quite difficult to wrap my head around the grandeur of The Wild Pear Tree. Clocking in at 183 minutes, this film is no walk in the park. Every scene takes its time, gradually flowing from scene to scene, never truly picking up the pace. Once finished with the film, I had no idea what my thoughts were. It took me discussing the film with a friend to really get my thoughts together. The Wild Pear Tree is a masterpiece, plain and simple. It's a film that, in a similar fashion to Roma, shows the lives of people, the daily struggles that a normal person goes through. Granted, many people cannot fully understand what it is like to go to college in Turkey, only to return home to find funding for your novel, but it's the day-to-day things that this film manages to capture that are truly stunning. What is equally as stunning is the overall look of the film, since it is one of the best looking films of the year. There were many shots throughout that left me utterly breathless, like they could be a painting, rather than something from a film. I think what really makes this film work are the performances, since they are so raw and so real. Nuri Bilge Ceylan is a director that I am familiar with, since one of my coworkers happens to love his work. I am glad that this is the first film that I was able to watch from him, since it truly is one of the most impressive films of the year. The Wild Pear Tree is a film that many people will not like, both for the running time, as well as the pace, but it's a film that honestly blew me away, which makes me very interested to see what else Ceylan has to offer.
