Road to Perdition

79/100 A father and son’s relationship is not the most loving but it’s definitely the most touching. The things a father does for his son are incomprehensible and the same should be the case vice versa.  While this film beautifully portrays this relationship, it quickly brushes aside the thrilling side to it. So I liked it and the music is great, especially the whole sequence in the rain with Paul Newman and Tom Hanks but this film sets out to achieve two things and ends up achieving only one. Had the potential to be much better but still a very good film regardless. Sam Mendes almost never disappoints. His films always look beautiful too. And I don’t know what it is about Paul Newman other than the fact that he’s one of the best looking men ever, he just oozes so much class and charisma in his acting and has a voice to match. Another incredible performance here while Tom Hanks did what Tom Hanks does.

Road to Perdition

A very good first act, a bit of a meandering but still somewhat fun second act (tonally shifts right in the middle of the movie), and one of the best third acts I’ve seen put to film. This is a great outing from Hanks, a strong supporting cast of big stars, and a VERY powerful performance from Paul Newman. Really great film.

Road to Perdition

“When people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man, or if there was just no good in him at all, I always give the same answer. I just tell them...he was my father.” When I hear the words “gangster movie set in the 1930s” the last thing I expect to watch is one of the most genuine and touching films about a father and his son I’ve ever seen, but that’s exactly what this is. I haven’t intentionally sought out Sam Mendes’ filmography but I’m strangely pleased to know that every film of his I’ve come across I’ve enjoyed. (Why, yes! I am ignoring Spectre good of you not to bring it up!) In Perdition, Michael Sullivan and his son are forced to flee from their home because…reasons, and in the midst of all the tragedy and chaos they get swept up in, the pair manages to better understand one another, and express their love for each other in a way that before these events occurred, wouldn’t have been possible for them. Who could’ve expected such a heartwarming center to a film that otherwise is about the mob, murder, and bank robbery? Surely not I...This reminds me of a lot of Logan, both films about violent fathers who’s greatest fears are being a failure to their kid, and leading them down the same path of violence and death that brought them to where they are today...*Luca Guadagnino voice* this is very telling of what I like about cinema! (Also, are we counting this a DC movie since this was based on one of their comics? I think we should girls…)

Road to Perdition

"And if I go?' "Then I will mourn the son I lost." In my opinion, not one of the best movies ever made as few people claim it to be, but still pretty fantastic. I don't know if it was my mood prior to watching this, but the first thirty five-ish minutes had me a bit sleepy and the music at times didn't help the case either, because although it established how high the stakes were but it also gave the impression that it was going to take itself super-duper seriously, more than it need to be. But it grew on me as did the music. It is beautifully shot and there are some really stellar scenes. Some that particularly stand out to me are: = When the kid witnesses the murder = The hotel scene when Michael pays the accountant a visit - it is craazy = Mostly everything from the moment Hanks and Newman have THAT conversation. And there final scene together, when you can see on John Rooney's face that he knows exactly what's up and coming next, and how much it aches Michael that he's going to have to go through with this in order to protect his other loved one...oof, I sure love acting (also, where is rain's award for taking this film to the next level) = The ending especially when they throw you off with that moment of normalcy so the subsequent scene comes as a surprise. And H doing the deed so his son wouldn't have to - to keep him on the good path. However, when it comes to the emotional department, it did not pack that much of a punch for me, mostly what it got from me was a lot of "oof", "hoe, don't do it" and aw :( ...so yeah.

Road to Perdition
