Benny & Joon
In a romance where our protagonists are eccentric filled romantics, Benny & Joon is very gentle, leaning to the safe side and never becoming overly dramatic. It aims at bringing smiles to the target audience: presumably both young romantics and young eccentrics. Our eccentrics are Joon and no, not Benny, but the Buster Keaton inspired Sam (Johnny Depp). Benny takes care of his sister Joon who is mentally ill. She's introduced swishing streaks of paint on canvas in a perfectly beautiful fashion, concealing her mental condition. It's slightly hinted when she phone calls Benny, worrying about the zero amount of peanut butter super chunks at home. It's apparent that Joon is mentally ill by a discussion between Benny and the social worker, who suggests a group home would be a valid option for Joon, but he's disinclined. Benny is a quintessential nice character. He puts Joon before himself, defunctioning his dating life. He's worn of it all though, making the trouble worse when Joon loses a game of poker to Benny's friend Mike at poker night. His bet: for Joon to take his oddbeat cousin Sam off his hands. It happens that Sam is different to the usual: he wears outdated clothing like a pork pie hat and takes inspiration from silent film stars, supporting his whimsical personality. Johnny Depp of course creates a sweet and physically comic performance, which works also in favor with Joon. Their romance helps with Benny's. He meets a young Julianne Moore and for once doesn't feel complicated. At moments his relationship appears more important than Joon's, which it shouldn't, despite occasionally undermining the relationship when it should now and then. But the undeniable pleasure of Benny & Joon is the Johnny Depp show. Even if his antics borrow from Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, they conjure a feel-good feeling that's hard to hate. No wonder he received a golden globe nomination. Mary Stuart Masterson as Joon is also quite the peach. Her schizophrenic-like outbursts are well executed and unexpectedly mold the type of relationships she has with Benny and Sam. I noticed Benny & Joon as a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy with a different, unique set of romantics in the lead roles. It happens to be the smartest thing about it. Touches could improve with the film's focus and events, but it's liberating to see two extraordinary characters arise from the specs of the 90s rom-com and not fall at any moment.
