Hairspray Live!
Hairspray Live! captures the pure joy that Hairspray offers. Maddie Baillio was amazing in her debut as Tracy. Harvey Fierstein is back as Edna, having the time of his life. Ariana Grande was one of the shining stars, with Jennifer Hudson completely taking over the musical. Hairspray Live! is much more enjoyable than Fox's The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I actually enjoyed it more than Grease Live. NBC has done some really great musicals, and I'm hoping that they do a great job with Bye Bye Birdie next December. Until then, I'll watch this over and over again.
Hairspray Live!
When it comes to musicals, Hairspray is one of the first musicals that I actually got into. From a young age, my grandmother and I would watch the film adaptation of the musical, and it's always stayed with me. As an adult who enjoys Broadway musicals, Hairspray still is a musical that sticks out for me and remains to be one of my favorites. Hairspray Live! could have been an absolute trainwreck, as every one of the live shows can be, but this was still so surprisingly good, it rivals the film version for me now in quality. The songs are as catchy as ever, the cast is fabulous, and it's always nice to see Fierstein playing Edna again. It's a fun take on a fun musical that I absolutely adore, and it was nice getting to see how good this actually was again.
