Final Exam
A Bay of Blood: A Ranking of Slashers (1974 - 1990) (http://boxd.it/IoH8) Final Exam is nothing more than a poorly crafted slasher, too careless and confused to even act like a proper slasher, but happily tolerable to watch and be dumbly entertained by. Its first act is surprisingly decent and campy good - it's just the rest that's hard to grasp. Characters are introduced on college campus nervously awaiting their final exam. A dark van circles the area, trailed by more college stuff. Rinse and repeat - and later throw in the kills. For what it is, the first act is fun to watch. But it's unfortunately dragged out and characters lose their touch fast. Heckled by a simplistic screenplay, the energy is thin and sparse and sometimes fun, but the pacing is terribly flat. Its piss-poor second act is beatless and boring and totally drawn-out, and the speechless killer is approached as a no-one. He's a guy with a knife. Slowly picking up in its third act, Final Exam is slightly more watchable, but undeniably frustrating when looking at an overall perspective. For the most part, this 1981 slasher slips and hits the ground hard.
