Murder-Rock: Dancing Death

Pins and chloroform. Sweat shrouded bodies stepping to the beat as they move inside the world of murder and dance in the big apple. Lucio Fulci directs this 1984 giallo; a film with the most elemental plot, yet almost excused by the stylish shots and energy it carries throughout. Murder-Rock: Dancing Death graces viewers with not one but two dance numbers in its opening ten minutes, and each one is directed so lively and upbeat that it almost makes you forget there's going to be murder involved in all of this — the shadows, the rain of sweat, and the splashes of weird moves make it a roar to watch. Despite the energy in some scenes, the film always has to be a bore whenever the detective shows up doing his thing. I'm sorry, but that's how I feel with a lot of slashers and giallos, especially when the detective is so uninteresting like this one. Still, Fulci manages to bring the murder, the dance, and the paranoia into one of his less blood-soaked releases and have most of it click.
