Mary Poppins Returns

I can recall the first time that I ever watched Mary Poppins vividly to this day. I was in my kindergarten music classroom, my teacher sat all of us down and rolled out the television, put in the VHS tape, and we all were transported to a world filled with wonder, song, and dance. I was transfixed from the very first moment I laid eyes on the film, and that awe still resonates with me. While I haven't seen the original Mary Poppins for many years, the memories I have of it still linger on. After hearing that there was going to be a sequel, which featured Emily Blunt, I knew that the film was going to be a worthy sequel. And in the loving hands of Rob Marshall, Mary Poppins Returns certainly is a worthy sequel. It's been a long time since I watched a film that left me feeling like I was that kindergartener again, and this film certainly did it for me. It's one of the rare Disney film that emulates what the classics brought; a fun atmosphere with lovable characters, paired with some great songs. While Julie Andrews has stepped down as Mary, Emily Blunt manages to be just as memorable and lovable as Andrews was. Mary Poppins Returns is a film that I want to watch again in theaters, just so I can spend as much time as I can enjoying this film. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the best of moods while watching this film, so I had some problems with some of the songs, especially the ones with Lin-Manuel Miranda, but I think that if I watch it in a better mood I'll enjoy those songs more. Altogether, Mary Poppins Returns is a great return for Mary, and one of the better Disney films that I've seen recently. It was nice to escape reality for a little while, and be transported right back into that kindergarten music room so long ago.

Mary Poppins Returns

The Year is 2018: Ranked and Reviewed (https://boxd.it/1OIs4) The wind blows; leaves pick up and twirl like little tornadoes. There's a storm brewing; the sky darkens and from out of its clouds, as they begin to separate, is a familiar outfit. It's in this space of about a minute, that Mary Poppins Returns—Disney's latest venture into capturing its classic days with bright FX—lets it be known that the Walt Disney icon from 1964 is an unaltered uniform that has changed face, yet, returns with the exact fashion and presence. Wherever Mary Poppins wanders she brings the spectacle and the delight along with her—it's too bad her return is simply just that and nothing else. For a film so bright and fizzy, Mary Poppins Returns feels so uninspired and, at times, so unexciting. The songs aren't very memorable—their mostly carbon copies of the original, yet, don't capture the same magic—and the whole film just feels like one "dazzling" sequence after the other. But it isn't a total disaster; the film has moments of true spectacle, being it the choreography of dancers, or the neat hand-drawn animation that enlightens the film a lot during one of its sequences. Nevertheless, there isn't a lot to fall in love with here. 2.7/5

Mary Poppins Returns

I don’t want to be harsh—I've been looking forward to it ever since they announced that it was in development; the feeling was multiplied ten folds when they revealed the cast— but do think, as is the case with most sequels, the first one was better especially with its execution of the simple plot. The external conflicts are rehashed and feel somewhat forced, and Mary Poppins’ magical escapist trips could have also been better incorporated. I was somewhat divided on the big explosion of colors earlier in the Royal Doulton Music Hall until it later grew on me as it went on. But that’s where my complaints end, and to be honest, the charm that oozes out of the film far outweighs its problems. I left the theatre with a huge smile, and a friend who is now a big Mary Poppins’ fan. The last minutes of the film, with dick van dyke’s return and ‘Nowhere To Go But Up’ capture the essence of both the films perfectly - a product of love and nostalgia that can’t help but make one’s heart burst with joy and happiness while also making them teary-eyed. Even though I just rewatched the first one last night, this made me want to revisit it again. AH their power!! All the times they mentioned ‘marmalade’ and ‘hamilton’ made me overly excited, as did the scenes where they referenced the 1964 masterpiece: whether it was jumbling the words of the anagram to spell out Dick Van Dyke in the end credits, or him almost telling the ‘wooden leg’ joke, or Lin’s character and leeries asking Mary Poppins to dance/join them. Following Julie Andrew and Dick Van Dyke is not easy, to say the least, but Emily Blunt and Lin did a good job. Nobody can match Julie Andrews, EVER!!! She embodies the role perfectly! But Emily gets close and somehow makes it look effortless, which is not surprising. Colin Firth and Ben Whishaw are also standouts. With la la land and now this, I’m becoming a pro at accidentally missing most of the opening song, so there’s that.

Mary Poppins Returns

Marry Poppins Returns es un retrato sobrio y sin encanto que medianamente logra hacerle justicia al clásico de culto de 1964,El director Rob Marshall logra dirigir correctamente a su equipo pero olvida dirigir una película con encanto y esencia.

Mary Poppins Returns

"Mary Poppins Returns" was...good, yeah, i feel early reactions were overly exaggerated but i had a fun time with it anyways. Emily Blunt does a great job, i didn't think she was AMAZING like most people were saying but she gets the job done without trying to be a Julie Andrews impersonation, but also Ben Whishaw and Lin Manuel Miranda need to be mentioned, cus for one, Whishaw has the strongest and most emotional performance in the movie and Lin Manuel is so full of energy and his songs were the highlight of the movie for me, specially "Trip a Little Light Fantastic", and the 3 kids in it were adorable. Now, why the hell was Meryl Streep even in this movie? she does NOTHING and her song was probably the weakest in the film, also why do we need a villian in this? why does Mary Poppins need a bad guy? it felt really forced and just a cheap way to extend the runtime, they could've shoved 10 mins off this movie and it would've worked just fine. But anyways, while "Mary Poppins Returns" has its flaws its without a doubt a well made and charming musical with some strong performances and beautiful visuals with some funny gags here and there, a practically perfect family film in every way......well not every way, but its close.
