Bro has no job, no direction, and way too much time — decides to uncover the secrets of LA instead of paying rent.
Under the Silver Lake

July 5 post: I'm going to have to watch this again just to confirm that I actually like it lol check back in a week or two for something more in-depth July 26 update: hey finally did it! so my instinct is Stick With This Score because it is beautiful, and there's a lot of stuff i still need to think about and read up on about this film to have a lot of it come close to make sense but it feels like all the big issues i have (pacing, runtime, everything feeling confused) was intentional? could be completely off with that though and giving this way too much credit. i wish A24 trusted this enough to put it in theaters nationwide, if only for a week; it would have liked the chance to see this on a big screen

Under the Silver Lake

Under the Silver Lake
It Follows certainly is a difficult film to have expectations after. It Follows cemented itself into horror canon, and I still regard it as one of the finest horror films of all time. With these high of stakes, director David Robert Mitchell would have to put out something that would top It Follows, and exceed what it managed to do. Does Under the Silver Lake do this? Absolutely. Now, I love It Follows with all of my heart. But, Under the Silver Lake is another being entirely. Dropping horror, Robert Mitchell decides to create a neo-noir, which also happens to be one of the most bizarre films of the year. As many noirs before it, the plot is very simple, but as you start to dig into the film, and you start getting further and further into the film, things get complicated, and it becomes a crazy adventure, with you never truly knowing exactly what is going to happen next. Granted, there are many neo-noir films that are better, especially Mulholland Drive, which covers a similar topic, as well as surrealist nature. Mulholland Drive definitely does the job better, but this film still stands as one of the strongest that I have seen. When looking at all of the components together, this film should have been a failure. There were so many odd things, whether it be the crisp visuals paired with the 40's inspired score to the odd pacing, this really should have been something that wasn't cohesive and wasn't an altogether good feature. But, Robert Mitchell knows that he's doing, and manages to balance the absurd with the real, the jumbled with the sorted, and creates a beautiful symphony that perfectly works in harmony. While there really are no standout performances, this film wouldn't have succeeded without any of the performances. Each character was so odd, each having their own little quirks that keep the story going. Andrew Garfield as the lead was an interesting choice, and he did an excellent job, but didn't steal the show. I'm very happy to see Riley Keough in something else, since she has been a star that has been on my radar for a while. And, we cannot forget the brief performance from Patrick Fischler, which makes yet another connection to Lynch's Mulholland Drive. Throughout the film, there were many twists and turns, so I had no clue where the film was going to end up. I believe that it did a great job at dejecting the odd side of Los Angeles and Hollywood, since I have been fortunate enough to spend some significant time in both areas. This film is nothing short of entertaining, and if one can get over the odd, surrealist aspects of the film, then this film will soar. It's nothing like It Follows, which I think benefits the film, since there's no way to compare the films, other than the stunning visuals, which do stay the same. Altogether, Under the Silver Lake is one of 2018's largest surprises, and one that I am very glad that I had the chance to see. It's a shame that this film was pushed back so many times, since it really does need to be seen on the largest screen possible, with the least amount of distractions as well to fully engage in it. Under the Silver Lake is yet another worthy film from director David Robert Mitchell, and I cannot wait to see what else he has to come up with, since I know that it is going to be nothing short of brilliant.
