Take Out

I really, really enjoyed this one a lot. It’s been sitting in my collection (blind buy) for a few months now, and I’m so glad I got it. “Take Out” is an incredible time capsule of a world that no longer exists, while still being relatable to all of the aspects of life that haven’t changed. There’s a scene towards the end that absolutely destroyed me more than I was expecting it to; it’s so tragic how the fear of being broke can outweigh so many other things - even in the face of physical danger and keeping ourselves safe. The Mini-DV look really makes NYC feel a lot grittier and grimier than it already is. Something about those sickish blue/green lights in enclosed spaces really evoked nostalgia in me; I could live in them forever.  Really liked this one; I would highly recommend it!

Take Out

“..𝘈 𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦. 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺.” A very Baker picture. Realism swells in the depiction of a working class immigrant take out delivery boy on bike in the streets of New York. Much of the pace and movement revels in documentary style, but it flourishes as realism. There were moments where I forgot that I was even watching a film, moving door to door, the kinds of people that require take out. The tips. The faces. The niceties at the door. The background noise. Baker sets out to set heart in the tone of his films to really round them out, but I appreciated this very much. It’s proof that naturalism and the heart of the underdog are his roots, his thesis, when it comes to making a picture. It’s also such a wonderful contribution to when indie filmmaking was in its prime for New York at the time.
