The Girl with All the Gifts
Bit lengthy but fascinating modern addition to the zombie subgenre, which has needed all the help it can get in terms of good entries these days
The Girl with All the Gifts
❝It's not over. It's just not yours any more.❞ ─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ─── Maybe I should stop watching films after rereading the source material, because most often than not they're not as good, which is definitely the case with The Girl With All The Gifts. I really like the book because there's so much information and background on the infection, the science behind it and how it affects the characters (both infected and non-infected) in different ways. Almost all of that is missing in the film. I understand that you can't have a film that follows the source material exactly without it being 4 hours long, but I feel like that's something frequently left out in zombie films that could've made this one special, as well as give the characters more personality (e.g. Kieran in the book shares some of Melanie's fascination with the post-apocalyptic world because he was born after the Breakdown). There are so many elements that aren't included or changed, like the base falling because of a coordinated Junker and hungry attack, and Melanie not telling everyone about the wild hungry children for fear Dr. Caldwell will experiment on them. These, again, add to the depth of the characters, and by bypassing them undoubtedly makes the film less impactful than the book. Leaving the book aside, the film is good but not great. Sennia Nanua definitely had the look, and she was adorable (which is kinda weird to me because I was literally the same age as her when it was filmed), but her acting needed a lot of polishing. The others in the main cast were excellent, though, especially Glenn Close. The CGI is a little janky, but the VFX on the hungries is very realistic and done well. What impressed me the most was the score; it reminded me of Annihilation because it was eerie and unsettling, though in a different way. It was very unnerving and in my opinion was used perfectly to highlight the horror felt by both Melanie and the humans in various situations. Would I rewatch this? Probably not. Would I recommend it to someone who hasn't read the book? Probably yes.
The Girl with All the Gifts
Pretty interesting concept, but could’ve used a little more development. Not a fan of the ending.
The Girl with All the Gifts
Really like the ending because I don't know who to root for. Though I do have a few questions too.
