Dunkirk

i'm just saying chris nolan is a mastermind for putting cillian murphy and harry styles in a movie together, even if they don't have a single scene together

Dunkirk

The story is deep and hard hitting, and shows the horrible nature of war. The scenes are literally beautiful, with some of the greatest shots I’ve ever seen. At times it feels very depressing as the story is so deep, however I still thoroughly enjoyed this.

Dunkirk

Cagey production-- the time/perspective shifts greatly reducing the scale of an otherwise massive operation. Nailed the claustrophobic, metal coffin terror, though.

Dunkirk

This is not a review. This is an appreciation. I watched every single Christopher Nolan film from start to finish: Following to Oppenheimer, and I saved Dunkirk for last. Seeing that 100% hit felt like closing a book you didn't want to end. Dunkirk might be the most intense film I've ever seen. I was on edge and stressed for the entire runtime eating my cuticles without even realizing it, which rarely happens. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack alone gives me goosebumps every time the man understands tension better than anyone ever lived . And Nolan understood something most war directors don't: you don't need to explain war, you need to make someone feel it. No backstory, no speeches, just survival stripped down to its bones. Tom Hardy carrying a whole film behind a mask again. Cillian Murphy traumatized again. Some things are just right. What makes Nolan untouchable isn't one thing it's everything together. The casting, the stories, the timelines, the dialogue, the obsession with doing it practically when everyone else went digital. There's no one doing it like him. Not even close. Now waiting for The Odyssey. He'll always be my favorite. This was the perfect film to end on.

Dunkirk

Dunkirk is one of the most impressive cinematic feats every to grace the big screen. Christopher Nolan's filmography has been impressive thus far, but nothing that he has directed even comes close to what Dunkirk manages to achieve. Seeing this film in 70mm film is the only way to experience this film. It's hard to say that a film is the best of its genre, but it's easy to see that Dunkirk is the greatest war film of all time. This film will resonate with every single person who watches it. Dunkirk is a masterful achievement in cinema that is remarkable in every way imaginable.

Dunkirk

The story’s mainly about survival with two other plots revolving around it and in the end everything ties together nicely. But idk this is the first time I’ve felt like something’s off from a Nolan film. Overall, I’d say it’s one of his weaker films.

Dunkirk

Nolan takes a step back from the wacky and the weird to tell a story about an incredible moment in history. This film feels very personal in the way it portrays its characters, though we learn actually very little about them, we still feel attached to them which is something I can't explain, I honestly don't know how Nolan made us care about characters we know so little about but boy do we care. It's personal in the sense that we witness the story through the perspective of the characters. There are three sets of characters that take place over three different periods of time, which sounds very Nolan but its actually pretty easy to follow. One story takes place over one hour, one over one day, and one over one week, and seeing the way these three different stories intertwine is immensely satisfying. In typical Nolan fashion, however, time is still integral to the plot and is even reinforced by the brilliant score by Hanz Zimmer by utilizing the ticking of a clock with varying increments depending on the timeframe currently being shown at that time. There is always a sense of anxiety and importance in what the characters are doing but maybe lost on some people who were familiar with the story of Dunkirk prior to this film, though I feel the tension would translate even still. Something I haven't mentioned yet is the downright ridiculous cinematography by the great Hoyte Van Hoytema. The fast ocean, crowded beach, and the open skies are present in a fashion unlike I've ever seen before. The sense of scale is felt in every shot which only adds to the sense of anxiety yet it's mind-blowingly gorgeous. Cinematography is war films have a history of being pretty immaculate but believe me when I say this is on another level, possibly the best-looking war film to date. Don't expect the typical Nolan complexity here, it's a little smaller than something like Inception or Interstellar but its no less masterful. Masterpiece.
