Suspiria

I've been sitting here for hours trying to find the words to provide my thoughts on the 2018 Suspiria (which I'm at least happy to say I've finally had the opportunity to view). It lingered throughout the closing credits, it lingered throughout my watch of Infinity War soon after because I felt I needed a popcorn movie to try to detox, and here I sit still thinking about it after waking up from a brief nap. It's not my favorite film of 2018 in the way that Annihilation definitely was, with its breathtaking visuals and its commentary on depression each being so meaningful and timely to me at this point in my life. It's not my favorite film of 2018 in the way that Hereditary maybe was, with a phenomenal debut from director Ari Aster and a jawdropping performance by Toni Collette that it shouldn't surprise, yet still infuriates, awards shows ignore because It's Horror. The way Suspiria might just be my favorite film of 2018, looking back on the year, lies in its all-encompassing beauty. Beauty in every shot of Luca Guadagnino's incredible direction. Beauty in every second of Thom Yorke's score. Beauty in the choreography of every dance scene from the cast led by Tilda Swinton. Beauty in each of Tilda's three (!) performances. Beauty in That Scene with Olga trapped in the room and contorting further with each new dance movement from Dakota Johnson. Beauty in Dakota's star performance where she earns the spotlight. Beauty in that entire surreal third act, a thing each film (Annihilation, Hereditary, Suspiria) seemed to have in common. Call Me By Your Name was beautifully made, and after this being his followup, Guadagnino is officially one of my must-watch directors going forward. The grandiose feeling I get watching even just the average shot from either film is impossible to describe, not to mention how well I thought the mostly-muted use of color (in contrast to Argento's film) worked. And Dakota Johnson. Full disclosure, I've watched all three 50 Shades films. There were two highlights I ever took away: the soundtracks were far better than the films deserved. And Dakota had the potential for great things as soon as she left the series in the dust after the third one released. One thing I'm happy I got right, she shines in a star performance here that no doubt surprised a lot of viewers. Like with Guadagnino, Dakota's worth keeping an eye on and I know now either name being attached to a project is going to be enough to get my attention. There are few films I could wait so long to see, yet maintain complete excitement for. There are even fewer films I could talk to anywhere near this kind of length on so effortlessly. At the end of the day none of this should have worked. A remake of Suspiria by the Call Me By Your Name director, scored by that guy from Radiohead, with Tilda Swinton playing three different roles including an old man, and starring Anastasia from the 50 Shades of Grey films; also it's 2.5 hours long. There were people skeptical from the moment even the words “A remake of Suspiria” were first uttered. Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria is a rare and beautiful beast. Like Annihilation, it's one I don't find myself forgetting anytime soon.

Lot of thoughts rolling around, but very glad to have seen both the '77 and this one in a single evening. The desaturated environment here is such a glaring contrast to the Technicolor burn of the original. Different mood piece entirely. (And that ain't necessarily a bad thing!)

what. the. actual. fuck!!! i'm amazed by this movie! even tho the run time of this movie was 2 hours and 33 mins, it kept me interested throughout the movie. tho, i do think the political plot in the movie was not necessary. and the dancing!!!!! i could watch hours of the dancing, it was so beautifully choreographed!
