The Dark Tower

5 years ago, I embarked on a journey, reading Stephen King's magnum opus called The Dark Tower. An astonishing 8 novel series, The Dark Tower transported me to a place that I absolutely loved, and I knew was going to be almost unadaptable. From the beginning, this book series seemed like it was going to be extremely difficult to adapt into a feature length film, or even a television series. There were so many aspects to the books that would make the films hours long, or make several seasons to adapt full novels. And here we are, with a feature length adaptation of the series, clocking in at a little over 90 minutes, covering about one and a half novels. To say that The Dark Tower is a disappointment is a complete understatement. I had hyped up this film in my head, well knowing that the film was never going to live up to my expectations. This is a tough novel to adapt, but I had hope that they would be able to adapt the first novel and keep it to the first novel. But, to my surprise, they decide to pretty much skip over the first novel entirely, only focusing on the introduction of one of the main characters in the second novel. This was a very interesting move, since they pretty much did end up skipping the first novel, instead going straight into the second novel. This move wasn't the best move for the series, since there are very important things that occur in the first book, since it really is the introduction to the main character of the series. The casting of this film was going to be controversial, regardless of who was going to be cast in the series. I was a big skeptical of Idris Elba's casting upon hearing of his involvement, since he was completely different than I imagined the character being, but Elba truly did become Roland, now being the face that I see when I think of the character. McConaughey was an interesting choice as well, but I think that he did a great job in his role as well. Tom Taylor was an interesting choice to play Jake Chambers, but was a good actor to play the character. I'm not entirely sure of the way that this series is going to go. Since they completely left out one of the pivotal characters of the series, I'm not sure how the filmmakers are going to continue the series, or if they are even going to bother creating more films. I am very excited to see the prequel television series, since they most likely are going to be adapting the fourth novel, one of my favorites of the series, if not my favorite novel in the entire series. It's a shame that this film wasn't as good as I hoped that it was going to be, since this series is a very special series for me. Fans are going to be disappointed, just as I was, but it still was an entertaining film nonetheless. This adaptation of The Dark Tower was disappointing, but hopefully this series can be redeemed with the prequel television series.
