Harold and Maude
I had heard barely anything about Harold and Maude before watching it. The only thing I actually knew for certain was that it was in the Criterion Collection. Other than that, I went in knowing absolutely nothing. And I loved it. While being quite melancholic, Harold and Maude was funny. It was lighthearted, while at the same time maintaining a melancholic feeling, giving the film itself an interesting feel to it. This actually works, despite the dramatic contrast, and creates some unforgettable moments and characters. I really did enjoy Harold and Maude. Both Gordon and Cort were fantastic, with their age gap seeming like nothing at all. It was surprisingly funny, making it actually one of the better comedies that I've seen.

Revisiting this for the first time in about 20 years, and man, it hits a lot harder now. Absolutely fantastic.
Harold and Maude
Complete with faked suicides and funerals, representations of life and death mingle with love and a considerable age bracket in this naturally quintessential dark romantic comedy. Harold and Maude seems to adopt death as a distraction from absolute life and living it to the fullest, as depicted by the obsessed with death Harold and the young at heart Maude. The film makes a case about repressed emotions and change, using Harold as a weird protagonist who desperately needs a switch, despite a bitchy mother and the rich life. Maude is the 79 year-old woman who lets him embrace life, and whether it be borrowing cars or learning the banjo, the two seem to click. It's oddly romantic at times, and for the most part, obscurely funny.
